In late autumn 2009, 200 kilometers north of Quebec City, a survey crew from Genivar, one of Canada’s largest engineering firms, accidentally let slip its Ashtech MobileMapper CX into the fast moving Pika River.
The crew was working on a hydrographic survey in preparation for bridge repairs. They were walking across the Quebec Pika river bridge on November 26, 2009, carrying their Z-Max GPS land survey rover, when their MobileMapper CX field terminal fell into the water and was swept away by the current. A search failed to find the unit.

Fast-forward to March of this year, nearly a year and a half later, another Genivar survey team continuing work at the site spotted, completely by chance, the lost MobileMapper CX lying submerged on the rocky bottom of the icy river. The crew was able to fish out the lost unit and immediately inserted a charged battery in the retrieved MobileMapper CX.

The crew reported it “lit right up, FAST Survey started running and the data collected 15-months earlier was still there.” The Ashtech MobileMapper was as good as new, and Genivar has since returned the MobileMapper CX to service. It continues its excellent performance to this day.
